What is Leprosy?

Leprosy, or Hansen’s disease, is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. It primarily affects the skin, peripheral nerves, upper respiratory tract, and eyes. The disease can occur at any age but is completely curable with early treatment, preventing disabilities.

Transmission and Symptoms

Leprosy spreads through prolonged exposure to an untreated individual, possibly via respiratory droplets. The disease is mildly infectious, and over 99% of people have natural immunity. Common symptoms include skin lesions, sensory loss, and thickened nerves. Leprosy is classified into Paucibacillary (PB) and Multibacillary (MB) types, with MB being more severe.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Leprosy is diagnosed based on skin lesions, sensory loss, and skin smears. It is completely curable with Multidrug Therapy (MDT), which includes rifampicin, dapsone, and clofazimine. WHO provides free MDT worldwide, ensuring effective treatment within 6-12 months.

Impact and Stigma

Despite being curable, stigma and discrimination remain a challenge for people affected by leprosy. Misconceptions about it being hereditary or a divine punishment lead to social isolation and exclusion. Families often reject affected individuals, leaving them without support. This social stigma severely impacts their mental, emotional, and economic well-being.

Breaking the Stigma

Leprosy is not hereditary, does not spread by touch, and can be treated early without lasting effects. Awareness, education, and inclusion are key to eliminating the stigma and ensuring dignity, rights, and opportunities for those affected.
